Corrections Center Engineering and Commissioning

Washington State Department of Corrections
Cornell, Washington, USA

The Coyote Ridge Corrections Center is the first correctional facility of its size to apply sustainable development standards in design, and the first to achieve a LEEDŽ Gold certification. CH2M HILL provided LEEDŽ project administration, engineering, and commissioning services for this medium-security prison complex. Sustainable design was a cornerstone of project delivery from the beginning--not simply to satisfy LEEDŽ credits, but as a benefit to the environment and the community.

University Science Center Design and Renovation

Portland State University
Portland, Oregon, USA

Since 2005, CH2M HILL has worked with Portland State University to assess the status of its outdated Science Building 2 (SB2), support fundraising efforts to upgrade the facility, and provide architectural design and engineering for the first phase of the new complex. The renovated SB2 houses labs for biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics, as well as offices and a student commons. The new facility is designed to LEEDŽ Silver standards. Due to the energy-efficient design, the building uses approximately 50 percent less conditioned air than before the upgrade. This is just one of many benefits included in the new facility.

Sustainable City O&M and Community Involvement

City of Fayetteville
Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA

Fayetteville is located in the Ozark Mountain Region of Northwest Arkansas, an area deemed the Green Valley Network, "a global hub for sustainability and innovation." CH2M HILL began performing operations and maintenance services for the City more than 20 years ago, operating the Paul R. Noland Wastewater Treatment Plant. The plant staff continually look for ways to improve operations. Working together, CH2M HILL and the City have successfully completed many sustainability initiatives, making the City's wastewater operations greener, leaner, and increasing its positive effects on the community. City staff and the community--both of which place a premium on excellent environmental, economic, and social practices--benefit from CH2M HILL's value-added services.

Green Infrastructure for Combined Sewer Overflow

Onondaga County
Onondaga County, New York, USA

CH2M HILL is assisting Onondaga County in updating a combined sewer overflow (CSO) program to incorporate green infrastructure on an unprecedented scale. The desired outcome is to implement a balanced green-gray CSO control program that reduces CSO events and volume to lake tributaries and to achieve water quality standards; to increase environmental, aesthetic, and public benefits through use of greener technologies; and to reduce projected long-term capital and operation and maintenance costs. The new program will increase CSO capture from 85% to 95%, as well as beautify and green many areas of the County.

Wetlands Treatment System Design

City of Albany
Albany, Oregon, USA

Working with the cities of Albany and Millersburg, Oregon, and metals manufacturer ATI Wah Chang, CH2M HILL developed an integrated wetland treatment system to address complex regulatory challenges resulting from the establishment of Willamette River total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for temperature. The Talking Water Gardens project created and restored wetlands along the river and enhanced wildlife habitat while reducing the temperature of wastewater treatment effluent discharged to the river to below TMDL limits.
