Mark Alpert has been selected as the winner of the Design-Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) 2009 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award. Alpert is being recognized for his significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and the advancement of design-build delivery. The award will be presented on Friday, November 6, in Washington, DC during An Evening of Entertainment and Celebration, DBIA’s annual awards dinner.
Julián Sandino received a lifetime professional achievement award from ACODAL, the Colombian Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (a member association of the Water Environment Federation). The award was given during ACODAL’s annual congress held in Santa Marta, Colombia, at the end of September. As the featured international lecturer of the congress, Dr. Sandino taught a short course, presented two papers, and led an inter-agency task force to establish the biosolids regulatory framework for Colombia, Dr. Sandino’s birthplace.
Priya Sathyanarayan was selected by the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association to receive the Chair’s Award for her commitment and efforts to continue AWWA’s mission and work for the protection of the public’s drinking water. The award was presented at the section’s fall conference in October 2009.
Linda Macpherson was named a WateReuse Person of the Year by the WateReuse Association; additionally, the Clovis Water Reuse Facility, designed, built and operated by CH2M HILL, received the WateReuse Award of Merit. The WateReuse Association is a nonprofit organization that advances the beneficial and efficient use of water resources through education, sound science, and technology.
Glen Daigger has been chosen as president-elect of the International Water Association (IWA). Daigger, who is recognized worldwide as an expert in wastewater treatment technologies, was elected Saturday, September 5, at the IWA Governing Assembly, held in The Hague, Netherlands. Daigger has been a member of IWA for 36 years, and has served most recently as senior vice president and as a member of the Finance and Investment Committee. Daigger will serve as president-elect for a year. He will then take office in September 2010 at the IWA World Water Congress in Montreal for a 2-year term as president.
Udai P. Singh is president of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), effective October 1, 2009. Two years ago, he was elected to serve a 4-year term on the society’s governing board. Dr. Singh has now completed one year each as vice president and president-elect as a part of his term.
Faye Tate was appointed to the National Board of Directors for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a national organization that focuses on the rights of gays, lesbians, and transgender persons. Tate was also honored on September 24, 2009, as one of the five finalists for the Frances Weimar Jacobs award recognizing women in Denver, Colorado, who are leaders in philanthropy. In addition, Tate received the Outstanding Women in Business Award from the Colorado Black Women for Political Action on October 3, 2009.
Peter Colussy was selected as the Outstanding Community Planner of the Year by the Air Combat Command of the United States Air Force. Colussy played a critical role in the base relocation work to support the upcoming military construction (MILCON) project and also supported the 379th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron.
Jeff Randall was elected to the executive committee of the Association of State Boards of Geology, the organization that develops and maintains the national geologist licensing examination. Randall also recently completed his second 4-year term on the Washington Geologist Licensing Board, where he helped write the state geologist licensure regulation and, as board chair, oversaw the new licensure of 2,500 geologists, hydrogeologists, and engineering geologists.
John J. Zudans has been appointed as chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Operations and Maintenance Standards Committee for a 3-year term. The committee, of which Zudans has been a member for 30 years, develops, reviews, maintains, and coordinates codes, standards, and guides applicable to the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants.
Patrick Karney has been re-elected to the Board of Clean Water America Alliance. The alliance’s mission is to change the water paradigm so that the ideas of clean water, drinking water, storm water, and water reuse are no longer segregated. The organization will champion meeting future water challenges by focusing on sustainability and green cities.
Don Anderson in Belleview, Washington, and John Anderson in Oakland, California, have been named Diplomats in Geotechnical Engineering by the Academy of Geo-Professionals. They are among the initial group of 60 eminent geotechnical engineers in the United States and Canada who were awarded this credential in recognition of their contributions to the practice of geotechnical and foundation engineering.
Nason J. McCullough has received the TCLEE Honor Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering in recognition of significant contributions to lifeline earthquake engineering by supporting and advancing the aims and objectives of the council.
