Roger Flint, Vice President and Area Manager in Spokane, Washington, was appointed co-chair of the Consortium of Leading Energy Efficiency Northwest Companies (CLEEN) with the Greater Spokane Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Authority for 2010. The group objectives are to raise awareness for regional clean technologies and to attract companies and entrepreneurs to the area. Flint will chair various initiatives including industry networking, memberships, educational opportunities, and industry developments, and will assist with the implementation of a workforce development strategy.
Porie Saikia-Eapen, Water Business Group Vice President and Area Manager in New York City, New York, recently attended the Chartered Institute of Building’s (CIOB) Annual General Meeting and Congress in Shanghai, China. She participated in a panel entitled Women’s Leadership in Sustainable Urbanization, featuring four women speakers from China, Australia, South Africa, and the United States. In addition, Ms.Saikia-Eapen was highlighted in Women Talent, a Chinese publication focused on professional women.
John Mika, Senior Vice President of Procurement, has been named the Executive Director of the Procurement Executives Group (PEG) for the engineering and construction industry. PEG membership is restricted to senior management procurement executives. The members provide key input and guidance on prominent Construction Industry Institute (CII) projects related to procurement, for example, materials management, supply chain, and product integrity. PEG is the premier procurement industry organization for the energy and chemicals business.
Mathew Wilson, Principal Economist for the Carbon and Energy management team in the Industrial Systems Business Group, was recently recognized as an author with a most cited article in Economics and Finance journals 2005-2009 by Elsevier publishing, Amsterdam, Netherlands. The award is for Wilson’s 2005 co-authored paper "Rethinking the scope test as a criterion for validity in contingent valuation," published in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management vol. 50(1), pp 1-22. The paper derives from his doctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and forms a foundation for the economic analysis he uses to assess valuation trends and price forecasting for energy and carbon markets today.
Gordon Garner, Vice President and Senior Client Service Manager in the Water Business Group, was selected as one of the 2010 recipients of the University of Kentucky, Department of Civil Engineering’s Civil Engineering Career Achievement Award. The award is a tribute from the Civil Engineering Alumni of the University of Kentucky and recognizes civil engineers who have exhibited outstanding ability, integrity, service, ethical behavior, and significant achievement in their professional careers. Garner has both his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky.
Bruce Manning, Water Business Group Principal Technologist, was recognized for the Dr. Warren A. Kramer Award by the Missouri section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) for writing the best technical paper of the year in the state of Missouri on the subject of drinking water or source water protection. Manning, who is also the Chair Elect for the AWWA-MO section, was presented with the award at the annual AWWA-MO conference on March 31. The paper focused on the separation of highly radioactive residues from water that are contained in K Basin at Area 100 in Hanford, Washington. While numerous scientists and engineers have attempted to perform this treatment and separation process in the past several years without success, the process Manning developed and describes in the paper is the first of its kind to show success in a timely manner.
Glen Daigger, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, was presented with Purdue University’s 2009 Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award on April 15 during the awards banquet held at the Purdue Memorial Union. Selections for these awards were made by a senior faculty committee and approved by the entire civil engineering faculty. The awards are based on career achievements and contributions to the civil engineering profession, and provide the school the opportunity to recognize the career accomplishments of some of Purdue’s most influential civil engineering graduates.
Angela Barch, an engineering intern in the Tampa, Florida, office, recently won the Florida Water Environment Association’s (a chapter of the Water Environment Federation) Water/Wastewater Student Design Competition. The project, which Barch and a fellow University of South Florida student developed, is a low-cost, low-energy method of treating slaughterhouse effluent in Bolivia, working within a number of constraints. The project will compete in New Orleans in October for the national competition at the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference.
Ashley Rath, Conference Manager in Corporate Communications, has joined the ranks of the trade show industry's top talent by completing EXHIBITOR's Certified Trade Show Marketer (CTSM) accreditation program, the only university-affiliated certification program in the trade show and event marketing industry. Rath started the certification process in 2008, and has successfully accomplished all program requirements including a 28-course core curriculum, a comprehensive examination, and the acceptance of a Candidate Portfolio. Rath will be recognized in March 2011 as one of the new CTSM graduates at the annual awards ceremony at EXHIBITOR 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Daniel Dietch, a client service manager with the Environmental Business Group, was elected mayor of Surfside, Florida, over incumbent Mayor Charles Burkett. Dietch defeated Burkett, a two-term mayor, and will serve a two-year term.
Pam Holcomb, a project engineer with the Water Business Group, accepted a national award from the Florida Water Environmental Association aligned with the Water Environment Federation. The coveted Select Sanitary Sludge Shoveler award started in 1957 with three awards given each year. Holcomb is the seventh female to receive the shovel and is likely one of the youngest ever. She is also the second person from the consulting arena to be recognized for this award.
Demitria Wright, Project Scientist in the Environmental Services Business Group in Houston, Texas, received the Individual Partnership Advocate Award from the State of Texas Association of Partners in Education. Wright has served as a mentor for four years and as a partnership liaison between the firm and Holbrook Elementary School for the past two years. She organized and recruited mentors to the school and led various community service projects including supply drives, fundraisers, professional education, and outreach. In addition, she played a major role in recruiting additional business partners as part of a partnership recruitment effort.
Mary Anne Peck, an operations specialist in the Operations and Maintenance Business Group based in Boston, Massachusetts, has been awarded the distinguished 2009 Operator Award from the New England Water Environment Association. Peck was praised for her love of her job, her desire to protect the environment, and her diligent efforts to create a unique collaborative environment where employees feel appreciated and enjoy coming to work.
Chia-Teh Bien, Senior Technologist and Architectural Program Manager with the Transportation Business Group, was honored by The Prince of Wales Center of Sustainability Leadership Program (CSL) and Built Environment Foundation in London on May 10. Bien was nominated to The Prince of Wales University of Cambridge CSL program while he worked on the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Games program from 2006-2008. An active alumni member, Bien promotes environmental sustainability design and climate change initiatives for the firm through global program and local community activities in the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. Bien was recognized by His Royal Highness Prince Charles during a recent ceremony in London for his contributions to the University of Cambridge Post Certificate Sustainability Business Senior Executive Program. The award was presented at the CSL 15-year anniversary celebration event in London.
Glenn Rehberger, a business operations director in Newport News, Virginia, was selected for induction as a member of the Academy of Distinguished Alumni of the Via Department of Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. The Academy was formed in 1998 to recognize outstanding career contributions and community involvement of alumni. The award was presented to Rehberger on April 30 at Virginia Tech.
