19 January 2009 —Masdar City, the world’s first carbon-neutral development, is still looking to acquire many of the technologies that will help it deliver on its ambitious sustainability pledge.
Advanced desalination technologies, water recycling and waste-to-energy solutions were some of the areas most critical to the success of the project, said executives of CH2M Hill, the engineering, construction and operations company that was assigned the role of the project’s programme manager.
Many of the environmental challenges in the project can be overcome by architects, civil engineers and planners working on issues such as insulation, the sun orientation of buildings in the development, and density to promote walking and public transport. However, advanced technologies, most of which are not owned by Abu Dhabi-based companies, have a huge role to play.
“We are letting the whole world come to us. But we are not satisfied with the world’s best practices today,” said Jay Witherspoon, the technology director of CH2M Hill, explaining that the ambitious goal set by the city’s developers often required the deployment of solutions that had not been used before on a large scale.
