OAKLAND, 09 June 2008 — The high-profile I-680 Benicia-Martinez Bridge in northern California has received recognition as a best-in-class transportation project from California and national transportation foundations.
The American Road and Transportation Builders Association Development Foundation presented the project team, the California Department of Transportation and the joint venture of CH2M HILL and T.Y. Lin International, with an honorable mention Globe Award in the bridge category. The annual awards recognize private-sector firms and public-sector transportation agencies that do an outstanding job in protecting and/or enhancing the natural environment in the planning, design and construction of U.S. transportation infrastructure projects. Awards are judged by an independent panel of federal enviornmental specialists. The Benicia-Martinez Bridge project team was recognized for its efforts to minimize impacts on marine habitat during construction.
California's Transportation Foundation also honored the Benicia-Martinez Bridge project team with the Project of the Year Award at the 19th annual TRANNY Awards. The TRANNYs recognize excellence in California transportation projects.
The joint venture completed design for the 1.6-mile span bridge spanning the Carquinez Straits, and linking Contra Costa and Solano counties. Officially opened in August 2007, the 8,400-foot bridge provides traffic congestion relief to 100,000 vehicles daily. Designed as a "lifeline" structure, the bridge will remain open to emergency traffic following a major earthquake. Unique design features include use of high-performance, light-weight concrete to reduce the structure's mass and seismic demand.
"Our team applied many of the most innovative ideas in bridge engineering and construction to ensure that the people of California have a state-of-the-art structure that will serve them well for many years," said Mike Kennedy, president of CH2M HILL’s Transportation Business Group.
In addition, CH2M HILL and its partners received a TRANNY Award for the state's top aviation project, the LAX Runway 25L Relocation. The team demolished the existing runway 25L and moved it 55 feet south to improve air traffic safety. The project was completed in 8 months with minimal disruption of commercial and cargo operations at the world's fifth busiest airport.
