Engineers Make Basic Needs Attainable for the World's Poorest

15 February 2008 — Rather than vacationing at cushy poolside resorts rimmed with lush golf greens, some well-intentioned engineers volunteer to visit developing countries to help design and create access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

In 2006, Denver-based Water For People, a nonprofit humanitarian organization, launched its World Water Corps volunteer program. Last year, of the 76 volunteers who traveled overseas, more than 90 percent were engineers who mapped and assessed water needs in some of the world's poorest and most remote areas.
