Water Resources & Ecosystem Management (WREM)

Fast-paced population growth and dwindling water supplies make it more important than ever to efficiently manage and protect our water resources. Many areas of the world face daunting water resources challenges as the needs for water supply, irrigation, and hydroelectricity grow. As water becomes scarcer, and as threats posed by floods and droughts are exacerbated by climate change, our quality of life declines and environmental and social concerns increase.

Since our inception in 1946, CH2M HILL's scientists, engineers, and construction experts have been planning, designing, and constructing the world's most technically complex and significant water resource projects. We are developing groundwater resources in the West Bank and throughout the arid Middle-East; providing total water management solutions for island-nations such as Singapore; and continually addressing the critical water resources issues in environmentally sensitive areas of the United States, such as Florida's Everglades, Louisiana's Mississippi Delta, and California's Bay Delta.

Our projects succeed because, in partnership with you, we focus the proper blend of world-class technical resources with local expertise to ensure lifecycle value from concept to implementation and long-term operation.

Agricultural Services

For more than half a century, CH2M HILL has been providing state-of-the-art agricultural water resources management services to help you manage land, crops, and water in a sustainable manner, anywhere in the world. Our clients range from some of the world's largest irrigation districts funded and managed by centralized authorities to private farms requiring pragmatic solutions to their smaller, but no less significant, needs.

Our approach and processes focus on preserving surface and groundwater resources, instituting natural pollution deterrents, and increasing crop output through environmentally sound technologies. Our agricultural services staff provides expertise in soils, crops, hydrology, water chemistry, irrigation, drainage, and farming systems to achieve your goals.

Environmental Planning & Documentation

CH2M HILL's environmental scientists and planners work in harmony with project design engineers to help you plan, site, permit, design, and build projects with minimal risk to project schedule and budget.

We bring extensive local, regional, national, and international experience to environmental planning and documentation, and have partnered with our clients on large regional, multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional programs, as well as site-specific projects. Equally important, we also provide innovative approaches and tools to enhance the process and reduce the risks of delay or unplanned costs.

Our environmental planning and documentation services include:

  • National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance
  • eCommentSM services for public involvement
  • Siting
  • International environmental impact assessment
  • State environmental policy act evaluations
  • Permitting and regulatory support
  • Environmental planning

Groundwater Services

Surface and groundwater management is a fundamental element of water resources management. Surface water management involves the control, conveyance, and treatment of small streams and tributaries, large rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and oceans, while groundwater management includes the management of aquifers, wells, and underground lakes and rivers.

CH2M HILL's experienced staff can help you manage these resources to prevent erosion, bolster water supply, and provide increased accessibility for beneficial community use. Our full spectrum of surface and groundwater management technologies and services include:

  • Aquifer storage recovery (ASR)
  • Conjunctive use of surface water, groundwater, and recycled water
  • Deep well injection (DWI)
  • EIR/EIS Support
  • Groundwater modeling
  • Groundwater protection
  • Groundwater resource development
  • Groundwater tracers
  • In-situ treatment
  • Mechanical integrity testing
  • Recycled water recharge (RWR)
  • Water rights support
  • Watershed planning
  • Public supply
  • Well operation and maintenance

Wetlands & Habitat Management

Wetlands are delicate, yet powerful components of our natural environment. On their surface, they provide critical wildlife habitat and enhance the quality of the human environment. Beneath the surface, they provide a viable option in integrated water resource management solutions by naturally cleaning surface waters and helping control flooding.

Our wetland scientists and engineers provide comprehensive services related to wetland assessment, permitting, mitigation, design, and construction. We draw from years of experience in the study and use of wetlands to assist you in water resources management, offering full-service capabilities from initial permitting through final design, construction management, construction, and monitoring. Our effectiveness stems from a thorough familiarity with local, regional, and national wetland regulations and legislation. We know how to implement plans that meet all stakeholder interests.

Stormwater & Flood Control Services

Stormwater and flood control systems are part of most integrated water resource and land development projects. The major disciplines include watershed management, stormwater infrastructure financing, site planning, conveyance, best management practice design, permit implementation, flood control, and public education and involvement.

CH2M HILL is recognized as a global leader in the development of stormwater management schemes that address the need to control stormwater quantity and quality. We provide a wide range of services from site drainage and flood control design, to construction and operation of stormwater management facilities and major stormwater program implementation.

Inherent in our solutions is an environmental awareness that incorporates water quality and conservation with flood prevention, focusing on property protection while maintaining water quality and preserving the health and beauty of our waterways.

Water Resources Planning

CH2M HILL's water resources planning services integrate water resources engineering with environmental, bio-systems, and biological sciences to develop a holistic approach to total watershed management. Our services include the design aspects of water supply as well as the approaches that maintain or enhance watershed and ecosystem functions.

CH2M HILL's team of water resources professionals design, develop, and implement plans to manage current and future water resources as they relate to agricultural and urban development, surface and groundwater quality, human and wildlife habitat, stormwater infrastructure, and flood control. Our planning solutions can help you utilize, manage, preserve, and protect your water resources while satisfying the ever-growing needs of the rapidly changing world.
