Membrane Bioreactors (MBR)

CH2M HILL is the industry leader in the development, application, and design of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) facilities. MBRs combine conventional activated sludge technology with microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane equipment that performs the critical solids/liquid separation function traditionally accomplished using secondary clarifiers and effluent filters. The benefits of MBRs include superb effluent quality, automated operation, a compact footprint and potentially lower overall project costs.

We have assisted our clients with analysis, equipment selection, design and construction of many MBRs, using both traditional and design-build services. Our broad based expertise includes operation of the largest MBR facility in North America, and the design and commissioning of North America's first 2 mgd, 5 mgd, and 8.5 mgd MBRs, the latter commissioned for the City of Traverse City, MI in July 2004.

CH2M HILL has designed and/or commissioned MBRs using equipment provided by four different manufacturers. To help clients select the most appropriate solution for their needs, we apply a competitive membrane equipment selection and procurement process that considers both financial and non-financial criteria and that includes a unique equipment warranty program to minimize concerns regarding membrane life and replacement cost.

We consistently work with clients to advance the application of this breakthrough technology for wastewater treatment and are currently designing a 45 mgd facility and pilot testing a unique MBR configuration for a 150 mgd facility. The innovative, patented MBR solution for the Loudoun County Sanitation Authority's recently designed Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility illustrates the results our team can deliver for you.

Air Quality/Safety Management

CH2M HILL assists wastewater utilities with a broad array of services related to air quality needs including conveying, handling, and treating municipal wastewater odors and emissions; using chemicals for treatment; and reducing combustion gases. We handle air and odor emissions from wastewater treatment plants and collection systems, emissions of certain regulated chemicals (chlorine, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and digester gas) found at wastewater treatment plants, and offsite impacts from emissions of air toxics and odors. We recommend, design, and implement emission controls and provide air permitting services. We also provide public outreach approaches to address community concerns regarding odors and air emissions.

Combined Sewer/Sanitary Sewer Systems (CSO/SSO)

Wastewater professionals worldwide are dealing with the challenges of aging sewers and pump stations that are in need of structural repair, and have excessive wet weather flows that threaten to overflow to neighborhood streets and sensitive waterways.

Our clients seek our help with master planning, GIS, structural assessment, hydraulic modeling, and rehabilitation. While we can perform all of these individual services well, CH2M HILL excels in providing comprehensive planning and problem solving within the context of multiple regulatory drivers, financial limitations, and public perception. We can help you holistically address your needs and build on your systems of planning, inspection, maintenance, financing, public acceptance, and regulatory compliance.

CH2M HILL has been a national leader in addressing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) since the late 1980s and is currently the leader in providing planning and compliance strategies for sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) programs.

Natural Treatment Systems

Natural treatment systems consist of a wide variety of technologies that rely on natural environmental components to provide the desired treatment. Natural systems include soil-based technologies such as subsurface systems, slow rate and rapid infiltration land application systems, overland flow systems, and aquatic technologies such as treatment wetlands, floating aquatic plant beds, and stabilization ponds. Solar energy is typically the primary energy source for natural treatment systems, with substantially reduced reliance on fossil fuel inputs compared to conventional wastewater treatment systems that incorporate advanced mechanical and chemical technologies for reduction of pollutants in discharges. Natural systems typically require fewer operational personnel, consume less energy, and produce fewer residuals than higher-rate systems. Land requirements are typically greater for natural treatment systems than for conventional systems, and are most cost-effective where sufficient land of suitable character is available. Land application treatment and disposal is a logical choice when considering a treatment and disposal method capable of a reduced or zero discharge.

Biosolids (Residuals)

The term "residuals" encompasses the majority of solids generated from the water and wastewater treatment process. These solids include grit, screenings, and thickened and dewatered primary and secondary sludges. The term "biosolids" was introduced by the Water Environment Federation and other interested parties to support public acceptance and beneficial use of wastewater biosolids that have been treated by various stabilization processes.

As leaders in water and wastewater treatment in the United States and throughout the world, CH2M HILL has been responsible for a broad array of residuals facilities expansions and upgrades. Our services include planning, design, construction, startup, and operations. We have technologists with expertise in every technical area: processing (thickening, dewatering, and transport); stabilization (chemical, biological, and thermal); resource recovery and beneficial use (agricultural, nutrient management, and disposal); odor control and air quality (treatment and modeling); developing master and facilities plans; and public outreach and education.

Water Reuse

The United Nations has identified water scarcity as an issue of principal concern for this century. Reuse or water recycling will be a critical strategy to address this need. CH2M HILL's commitment to and leadership in reuse began over thirty-five years ago, with the design and operation of the US`s first full-scale advanced wastewater treatment facilities for the South Lake Tahoe Public Utility District. Since that time CH2M HILL has been involved with a number of firsts in reuse technology.

Our projects range in size from demonstration/pilot projects to full-scale operational facilities, such as the landmark Upper Occoquan Sewage Authority Regional Water Reclamation Plant, one of the world`s first and largest indirect potable reuse plants. Most recently CH2M HILL managed the internationally acclaimed NEWater reuse project for the Republic of Singapore. This landmark project successfully married advanced wastewater treatment technology with extensive public education and outreach. The result—public acceptance of indirect potable reuse, toasted with bottles of direct potable use water around the world and in Singapore.

As the world's leader in providing innovative planning, engineering and communications applications for water reuse and recycling, CH2M HILL brings clients award-winning solutions in all market segments. Whether you are exploring reuse alternatives in urban irrigation for landscape, parks and playing fields, in agricultural irrigation, industrial reuse, or habitat enhancement through constructed wetlands with or without indirect potable reuse, CH2M HILL can help. Our award-winning work utilizing recycled water in agricultural irrigation applications includes the reuse of treated wastewater for the Santa Rosa Subregional Water Reclamation System on pasture, vineyards and other crops. These comprehensive efforts involved planning, conveyance, design, and assistance in irrigation scheduling and application.

For urban irrigation applications, we offer recent experience at the Bend, Oregon Prong Horn Golf Course where an innovative partnership between the city and High Desert Development Company linked a 2.5 MGD reuse facility to the city's wastewater treatment plant and executed a long-term purchase agreement to supply the reuse water for landscaping and golf course irrigation. The West Basin Water Reclamation Plant represents the best in our work for industrial reuse along with the Santa Rosa's Geysers Recharge Project which recharges groundwater prior to becoming steam for power. The Wakodahatchee wetlands (from the Seminole for 'created waters') are award winning constructed reuse wetlands that restore historical ecosystem function by using treated wastewater to create a popular wetland park comprised of native south Florida plant species, habitats and wildlife.

In cooperation with numerous progressive organizations, CH2M HILL has implemented over 500 reuse projects across the nation and around the world - all of which gives us the unparalleled depth of experience to deliver success. Distinguish your project as one of the industry's best - put our experts to work for you.
