Water Portfolio Management

As communities grow and change, water resource management becomes increasingly complex. Escalating demands for water supply intensify the need for new sources, conservation, and reuse. At the same time, from a watershed perspective, environmental needs often are considered to compete for water resources. These dynamics highlight complex inter-relationships among the links in the water management cycle from source, to supply, to treatment, disposal, reuse, and back to source again. Such inter-relationships create greater complexity for water managers, who are already challenged to contain or reduce system capital and operating costs.

CH2M HILL's integrated water portfolio management team focuses on a collaborative process with clients to determine their overall goals and objectives for water management. We combine that data with simulation modeling to plan and implement water resource management from a total-system perspective. Our experienced staff analyzes the status and dynamics of supply, demand, cost, and risk throughout the system, develops simulation models using our proprietary VOYAGETM modeling tool, and then applies optimization technologies to identify the best resource management strategies system wide.

Integrated Water for Industry

CH2M HILL provides integrated water management services that span the full envelope of an industrial facility, from water resources management and planning, engineering, and construction through full operations. Our knowledge of manufacturing and production processes; the intricacies of water, wastewater, and storm water management and treatment; and the complexity of operating and maintaining treatment facilities is unique among our engineering and construction competitors.

The services that we provide include:

  • Waste minimization and regulatory negotiation/permitting
  • Integrated water management
  • Urgent response
  • Holistic capital expansion
  • Contract operations

Water & Wastewater Security

CH2M HILL has completed more than 100 vulnerability assessments and more than 50 emergency response plans for municipal drinking water and wastewater systems worldwide. The water systems have ranged in size from those serving populations from 20,000 to more than 1.5 million people with water flows ranging from 2 million to more than 200 million gallons per day.

The vulnerability assessments identify threats and critical systems, ranking the risk of each threat by estimating the consequences of an attack and the effectiveness of existing security measures. Threats from multiple types of adversaries are addressed, including terrorists, insiders, and lower level threats such as vandals or criminals. Methods to mitigate risk are identified, and costs to implement mitigation methods are estimated. Mitigation methods include access control, security policies and procedures, alarm systems, camera systems, perimeter detection, and installation of hardware and software designed to improve cyber security. In addition, vulnerability assessments address systems designed to provide early warning of system contamination as another method to reduce risk.

Emergency response plans include detailed procedures for responding to emergency events, such as contamination, loss of power, damage, or destruction of critical facilities and breach of computer and SCADA systems.

Desalination

CH2M HILL is an international leader in water resource development, providing advanced, sustainable solutions and systems for clean, safe water around the world. We use a full range of technologies—from three-dimensional computer design tools, UV disinfection systems, and micro-filtration and reverse osmosis systems to the most basic of water treatment systems—determined by the wants, needs, and financial requirements of our clients.

From utilities, communities, and industries in China, Singapore, and throughout Asia, as well as in New Zealand, Australia, and across the world in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Great Britain, and the Americas, CH2M HILL has the experienced staff, tools, and state-of-the-art technologies necessary to meet the escalating global need for clean drinking water.

Membrane Bioreactors (MBR)

CH2M HILL is the industry leader in the development, application, and design of membrane bioreactor (MBR) facilities. MBRs combine conventional activated sludge technology with microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane equipment that performs the critical solids/liquid separation function traditionally accomplished using secondary clarifiers and effluent filters. The benefits of MBRs include superb effluent quality, automated operation, a compact footprint, and potentially lower overall project costs.

We have assisted our clients with analysis, equipment selection, design, and construction of many MBRs, using both traditional and design-build services. Our broad based expertise includes operation of the largest MBR facility in North America, and the design and commissioning of North America's first 2 mgd, 5 mgd, and 8.5 mgd MBRs, the latter commissioned for the City of Traverse City, Michigan, in July 2004.

CH2M HILL has designed and/or commissioned MBRs using equipment provided by four different manufacturers. To help clients select the most appropriate solution for their needs, we apply a competitive membrane equipment selection and procurement process that considers both financial and non-financial criteria, and that includes a unique equipment warranty program to minimize concerns regarding membrane life and replacement cost.

We consistently work with clients to advance the application of this breakthrough technology for wastewater treatment. For example, we are currently designing a 45 mgd facility and pilot testing a unique MBR configuration for a 150 mgd facility. The innovative, patented MBR solution for the Loudoun County Sanitation Authority's recently-designed Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility illustrates the results our team can deliver for you.

Membrane Filtration

CH2M HILL has unparalleled experience in the application of membrane processes to the treatment of drinking water. Beginning with the design of the Cape Coral, Florida, water treatment plant in 1977, we have applied our membrane expertise to solve a wide variety of water quality challenges faced by our clients in meeting their potable water demands. Our personnel have extensive experience in the application of membranes for the following applications:

  • Removal of particulates and organics from fresh surface and ground water supplies
  • Softening and organics removal from alluvial groundwater
  • Desalination of brackish groundwater and seawater
  • Removal of inorganic contaminants, including arsenic, fluoride, and nitrate from groundwater
  • Control of particulates, hardness, organics, and total dissolved solids from brackish surface waters

Biosolids (Residuals)

The term "residuals" encompasses the majority of solids generated from the water and wastewater treatment process. These solids include grit, screenings, and thickened and dewatered primary and secondary sludges. The term "biosolids" was introduced by the Water Environment Federation and other interested parties to support public acceptance and beneficial use of wastewater biosolids that have been treated by various stabilization processes.

As leaders in water and wastewater treatment in the United States and throughout the world, CH2M HILL has expanded and upgraded a broad array of residuals facilities. Our services include planning, design, construction, startup, and operations. We have technologists with expertise in every technical area: processing (thickening, dewatering, and transport); stabilization (chemical, biological, and thermal); resource recovery and beneficial use (agricultural, nutrient management, and disposal); odor control and air quality (treatment and modeling); developing master and facilities plans; and public outreach and education.
