Our integrated engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) resources deliver tailored solutions to design and build power generation facilities that produce energy from natural gas, coal, oil, and renewable resources. We also help clients achieve clean air standards and review and implement repowering or upgrading of existing plants.
Our experienced professionals provide services ranging from site selection and feasibility studies, through design, procurement, construction, and plant start-up.
Combining specialized experience with innovative approaches, we can effectively accelerate and optimize the implementation of capital projects. Our collaborative approach helps clients take advantage of favorable market conditions and minimize capital costs.
Integrated EPC
Integrated EPC (engineer-procure-construct) is a project approach that simplifies management, reduces risk, and maximizes the value of capital investments. More than a project management methodology, integrated EPC is a mindset and a culture that requires all project team members to work together to remove the "silos" between conventional project activities from concept through commissioning. We take great care to cultivate project teams that are eager to combine the knowledge of engineering, procurement, construction, start-up, and operations to deliver optimized solutions to our clients.
Our EPC services include:
Repowering & Restarting
Our experts can help you compare the benefits, costs, and risks of building new plants versus repowering aging facilities. We'll help you consider factors such as new source reviews, fluctuating fuel costs, and public acceptance.
CH2M HILL offers complete services for operating facilities in the areas of repowering, maintenance, and modification work:
Environmental Services & Licensing
CH2M HILL has completed more than 2,000 environmental permitting and licensing projects for power and energy facilities around the world. Our experience surpasses that of our competitors in preparing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) for new development projects. Throughout the past five years, our environmental permitting services for proposed power plant projects in the United States and abroad have involved a total generating capacity of approximately 21,000 megawatts.
Our environmental scientists and planners work closely with our power plant design staff to integrate the latest environmental regulatory and engineering data, which allows optimization of the operating conditions for all permits and approvals. In addition, our firm is a leader in delivering greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory verification and field auditing services to define your emission reduction goals. We have assisted several companies and utilities with the development of their corporate GHG strategies by drawing on our energy portfolio strategy management services, including co-development of alternative energy solutions.
Air Quality Control & Permitting
For existing coal-fired power facilities, clean air mandates are increasingly challenging utilities' ability to maintain cost-effective, long-term operation. CH2M HILL is combining the advantages of our integrated EPC approach with the best and latest available clean air technologies to help our clients meet regulatory requirements, while ensuring that the best possible efficiencies are realized. Air permitting is often the critical path item for new power plants, as well as for upgrades to existing facilities. We provide timely new source permitting and cost-effective compliance with existing permit requirements, while minimizing corporate liability. We have developed an in-depth understanding of the regulatory requirements, modeling approaches, and control technologies to effectively obtain the necessary air quality permits and approvals for power plant projects.
Our senior air quality experts, many of whom have worked directly for the utility industry, have served as expert witnesses at public meetings as part of the overall permitting processes.
Water/Wastewater Optimization
CH2M HILL has developed a comprehensive approach to managing water and wastewater issues for power plants, which have resulted in significant reductions in water-related risks and costs for our utility industry clients. Our strategy considers water availability and supply and permitting issues in parallel with water requirements and power-cycle analyses. Water is a core business of CH2M HILL, and we offer full-service capabilities–from development and permitting through design, construction, and operations–for:
Modifications/Upgrades/Sustaining Services
CH2M HILL provides engineering solutions for plant modifications/upgrades/sustaining services including owner's engineer, small capital engineering work, studies, estimates, and loaned servant work. In addition, our construction services include maintenance work at operating facilities and small cap projects. CH2M HILL has the skills and expertise to support you on projects of any size or scope.
Project Siting
Our defensible site selection services are based on sound environmental, engineering, and cost criteria. We can help you identify candidate sites and furnish the screening services and resource evaluations for your power plant projects. We understand the importance of starting with the proper site based on rail, water, and transmission access. Environmental and land use issues–such as distance to Class I areas, the presence of sensitive ecological areas, and local residential and commercial development–are all key factors that must be considered in a successful site selection study.
We have conducted numerous feasibility studies for power plant projects that have evaluated environmental and regulatory requirements; availability of rail, transmission, and water for condenser cooling; and the overall cost of development. Our team of economists, environmental scientists, and power plant engineers take an integrated approach that results in reliable, cost-effective feasibility studies based on recent experience and up-to-date technology.
Carbon Capture
CH2M HILL has assisted some of the world's most prestigious corporations in developing credible, verifiable GHG inventories. For our industrial clients, we couple our experience in air emissions monitoring with energy and industrial process engineering expertise to deliver concrete carbon emissions inventories.
Our experts work with you to apply a variety of evaluation criteria ranging from return on investment to the collateral benefits to your firm, the environment, and the community to develop a selection of credible GHG management actions. We then bring added value to carbon management projects through our ability to design, build, and even operate the project, and we validate carbon reductions to an evolving work standard.
Renewable Energy
As one of the world's largest project delivery firms, we have the experience, skills, and resources necessary to develop, design, build, and operate renewable energy projects for any client, anywhere in the world.
Our renewable energy team offers a number of technical and environmental services critical to the development of projects that incorporate renewable energy technologies. Our Power Group's involvement in this market area includes an understanding of, and project experience with, biomass and biofuels along with solar, wind, and geothermal energy technologies.
For renewable energy projects, we offer project feasibility evaluations; resource, siting, and fatal flaw assessments; project permitting; environmental, cultural, archeological, and wildlife assessments; transmission analyses; geotechnical evaluations; and EPC services.
Nuclear Power
CH2M HILL provides a full range of services to the nuclear power industry, from siting, licensing, and permitting, to design and construction management and full-service EPC delivery. Our life-cycle solutions also include facility upgrades, emergency response, incident management and control, and actions involving environmental contamination, including tritium and other isotopes, as well as decommissioning and license termination.
