Environmental

Unlike the outspoken economic voices of a century ago, none today would question the importance and benefits of environmental stewardship. But while the "why" and "what" are self evident, the issues of "how" and "how much" can prove elusive and perplexing. Since its inception, CH2M HILL has promoted environmentally sound solutions for its clients so vigorously that it has helped shape much of the environmental policy of postwar America. Today we help clients in both government and industry protect and restore natural resources as cost-effectively as possible.

By applying our expertise in remediation, waste management, ecosystems, and brownfield development to industrial issues, we are enabling chemical companies to turn liabilities into assets at dozens of sites in North America and Europe; a mining company to remove a mercury scrubber in Indonesia; and manufacturing firms to mitigate environmental impact. Whether the focus is preservation, profitability, or both, we help clients find a practical equilibrium between the balance sheet and the balance of nature.

Brownfield Redevelopment

CH2M HILL provides services to increase your asset's value while minimizing liabilities. Many of our clients own environmentally distressed properties with remediation liabilities and resultant depressed asset values. Other clients seek to buy properties for commercial redevelopment and utilization. We provide services to both groups.

For property owners and sellers—CH2M HILL assists in positioning clients' properties for sale or transfer with or without remediation liabilities. We can also assist in the selling of property as-is. Clients' corporate asset value can often be increased by the sale of a property if the value, as properly marketed for optimum land use, exceeds the cost of eliminating the remediation liability. The sale or transfer of the property and the elimination of the remediation corporate liability improves the corporate balance sheet.

For property buyers and redevelopers—CH2M HILL assists in matching sellers to buyers. We then assist the buyer in developing the property, including elimination of the remediation liability. CH2M HILL's involvement assures the buyer and seller that the remediation will be done in a high quality manner, consistent with development plans, and that the liability will not return to the seller.

Climate Change/Carbon Mining

CH2M HILL helps you mine emissions inventories for emission reduction opportunities that serve a variety of corporate goals. Our experts work with you to apply a variety of evaluation criteria ranging from return on investment to the collateral benefits to the firm, the environment, and the community to develop a selection of credible greenhouse gas (GHG) management actions. CH2M HILL then brings value to carbon management projects through our ability to design, build, and operate the project, and we validate carbon reductions to an evolving work standard.

We assist some of the world's most prestigious corporations in developing credible, verifiable GHG inventories. For our industrial clients, we couple our expertise in air emissions monitoring with energy and industrial process engineering to provide concrete carbon emissions inventories. For our municipal clients, we bring renowned transportation planning, land use planning, solid waste management, and water and sewage treatment expertise to provide comprehensive municipality-wide carbon emissions inventories. For clients interested in ensuring maximum value from carbon sequestration in forestry and agriculture, our senior soils scientists, forestry, and wetlands scientists ensure accurate assessments.

Munitions & Explosives of Concern

CH2M HILL is a leader in providing Military Munitions Response Program planning, compliance, and restoration services to our customers. We stand apart as one of the few companies with the breadth of expertise to provide cradle-to-grave services to meet your Munitions Response requirements.

Our experience includes the full spectrum of compliance-related reporting, management, and permitting for active ranges, and for site cleanup. CH2M HILL's success coordinating with regulators and addressing community concerns ensures that environmental regulations and public involvement issues do not adversely affect the testing, evaluation, destruction, or cleanup goals at a given site.

In response to the growing need for a more acceptable method of ordnance disposal, CH2M HILL offers a safe and environmentally friendly regulatory-approved technology, the controlled detonation chamber. This is the only transportable and fixed controlled detonation chamber approved by the U.S. Department of Defense Explosives Safety Boards for the destruction of conventional munitions. The chamber meets systems environmental and safety standards and a cost-effective alternative to OB/OD for MEC destruction.

We offer a wide range of interrelated and overlapping MR services, grouped into the following areas:

Waste Management

There's no shortage of waste. However, there is a shortage of knowledge about turning waste into a financial and environmental asset—how to go beyond "reduce, reuse, recycle" to potentially generate new revenue at the same time that we help sustain the environment.

At CH2M HILL, we help you to eliminate waste entirely or convert it to a useful product. In fact, we have used new and emerging technologies to develop systems that achieve more than 85 percent recovery or reuse of materials that were formerly considered waste.

CH2M HILL provides you with comprehensive waste resource and management solutions, whether you're in government, industry, or business. From planning, designing and constructing waste system infrastructure, to innovative technologies and systems to process, recycle, reuse, and dispose of waste, our firm is a leader in sustainable waste stream optimization.

Our patented technologies include C:N Composting Systems and BIOCLEAN Biofiltration Systems.
